Compact drilling system for residential geothermal heat pumps

Andreas Michalka

COO at Flexdrill GmbH

About

Flexdrill is a compact drilling system built specifically for shallow geothermal applications such as ground source heat pumps.

Current drilling methods rely on heavy rigs, large crews, and complex logistics. This makes many residential projects too expensive or simply not feasible.

Flexdrill takes a different approach.

The system is modular, transportable in a standard van, and operates from a footprint of around 1 m². It is designed to work in locations where conventional rigs cannot operate, including small gardens, narrow access points, and even indoor spaces like basements or garages.

Instead of transferring mechanical force through long drill strings, Flexdrill uses a water-driven downhole system to generate drilling power directly at the drill head. This reduces system complexity, equipment size, and operational effort.

Key benefits:

  • Access to sites that are currently not drillable

  • Reduced drilling cost compared to conventional methods

  • Minimal disruption to homeowners and surroundings

  • Operation with a small crew and simplified setup

  • Integrated casing concept where the outer pipe remains in the ground

The system is designed for drilling depths up to 200 meters and targets fast installation times under typical ground conditions.

Flexdrill is currently in development with pilot deployments planned. We are looking for pilot customers, distribution partners, and companies interested in applying the system in real projects.
