ELEMENTA - Material Intelligence Platform for Early-Stage Refurbishment Decisions
About
The Material Intelligence Platform is an early-stage decision-support tool developed by LX Design Studio for architects, planners, developers, and asset owners working on refurbishment and circular design projects.
The platform addresses a gap that exists before formal LCA tools become applicable: the early design phase where material decisions carry the highest leverage on both cost and environmental outcome, but where structured decision support is currently missing.
The platform works by mapping real material quantities across retain, reuse, refinish, and replacement scenarios. It classifies materials by indicative embodied impact class, visualises circularity pathways, and links material choices to cost delta ranges, allowing teams to compare strategies side by side before committing to a design direction.
It is currently in prototype development, grounded in real project data and first presented publicly at Dutch Design Week 2025 through the installation "The Weight of What We Build."
